What is a domain?
When you look at the top a a website you will see the URL name. Usually that’s the company’s, the website’s, or the store’s name. On my own website it’s the following:
You want this name to be YOURS only, so that there’s not going to be a second website with that name out there! To do so, you need to purchase a domain. Don’t worry, getting your domain is not difficult nor expensive at all. Most domains cost around 10 – 20 Euros per year.
To purchase a domain you need a domain registrar, that is basically your domain provider. In the following I’m going to show you how to purchase a Google Domain.
1. Where to purchase your Google Domain
Go to https://domains.google/ and sign in with your Google account details. If you don’t have one yet you can create one for free.
2. Choosing a domain extension
A domain extension is the .com, .org, .co.uk, .net, etc. at the end of a URL.
There are dozens of helpful videos out there that can support you in choosing the perfect one for you.
3. Choosing your domain name
When you are logged into Google Domains, go to GET A NEW DOMAIN, type in the domain name you would like and check if it’s still available. Choose the one you like best and place it into the shopping cart:
4. Privacy protection & auto-renew
I recommend to turn on privacy protection and auto-renew. This will help protect your domain and you won’t have to worry about buying your domain again because your subscription will be renewed automatically after a year has passed.
If you don’t have a business email address yet I recommend you also purchase Google Workspace. Prices vary depending on the domain extension.
5. Checkout
Proceed to checkout and pay for your new domain (and Google Workspace).
